Welcome to the website of Dr. Don Kistler. Dr. Kistler is a Bible teacher and author. If there is a theme to this website, it is “Doctrine Matters.” As the Puritans would often say, “Theology is the art of living well to God.” Proper theology should culminate in proper conduct and practice, or, “Orthodoxy leads to orthopraxy.” We will not live any better than our theology; we may not live as well as our theology, but we will never live any better.

Here we hope you will find teaching that will influence and guide your decisions, choices, and behavior. Since theology is about God, it is imminently practical by its very nature. The more we know God, the more we will seek to imitate Him and the more we will please Him.

The Character of a Pastor According to God’s Heart Considered – is an ordination sermon preached in 1752 by a man named John Shaw, pastor of a church in Bridgewater, MA. The sermon is based on Jeremiah 3:15: “I will give them pastors after My own heart.” (This material is copyrighted)

The Sabbath is a Blessing to Mankind – Gardiner Spring was a famous Presbyterian preacher in New York City in the late 1800’s.  His best known works are “The Distinguishing Traits of the Christian Character,” published by The Northampton Press, and “The Power of the Pulpit,” published by the Banner of Truth.  This is a short treatise he wrote on the benefits of keeping the Sabbath, and how it is beneficial to do so for believers and unbelievers alike.

When Jonathan Edwards died in 1758 he left behind nearly 1100 sermon manuscripts. Many of those are housed at the Beinecke Rare Book Room at Yale University. The two-volume edition with which most people are familiar contains only sixty-six of those sermons.

Here are fifteen sermons by this great New England preacher, thirteen of which have never been published before. His sermon on John 3:16 is a masterpiece.

I have published nearly 300 titles over the last nearly 30 years, and without a doubt this is one of the top 3 as far as how moved I was by the content. I’d say the other two were “The True Christian’s Love to the Unseen Christ,” by Thomas Vincent and “Gospel Worship” by Jeremiah Burroughs.

Law and Liberty
There are two deadly extremes Christians must avoid – legalism and antinomianism. Both are antithetical to the gospel. One raises God’s standards and the other lowers them. This book addresses the first of those deadly traps, that of legalism. It is a term that is often thrown about, but is seldom defined.
In this helpful book, several noted preachers and theologians show what legalism is and how destructive it can be to a right understanding of both justification and sanctification. Legalism is “a yoke that neither we nor our fathers could bear.” Fortunately, that “yoke” was borne by Christ at the cross, and He alone is able to bear it. He has “fulfilled all righteousness” for us, and that is a reason for rejoicing.

Let Us Pray
When our Lord’s disciples came to Him regarding prayer, they did not ask Him to teach them how to pray, but rather they asked Him to teach them to pray. Obviously even those closest to Christ needed to learn to pray. And so do we.Here, some of our best Bible teachers and expositors give us instruction on prayer, from why we should pray, to what prayer is, how it ties in with God’s sovereignty, what it means to pray in Jesus’ name, what it means to hallow God’s name, and why God is to be the focus of our prayers, not ourselves. These, and many other topics, are addressed in this helpful book.

The Precious Things of GodThis book is especially timely in light of Rob Bell’s recent book release called “Love Wins,” in which he denies a literal hell, other than the one we make for ourselves. But over 300 years ago John Bunyan wrote this little work in which he exposits the story in Luke 16 of Dives and Lazarus, and shows biblically that hell is quite literal—at least Jesus thought so!  This book has been slightly updated as to language and grammar. It is hardbound and printed on acid-free paper. While this work of Bunyan’s is not as well known as “Pilgrim’s Progress,” it is very important, particularly for evangelism. This is what sinners need to be saved from! Order NowRead the first chapter

The Christian's Armor Every true Christian is in an all-out war with the devil and his angels. Fortunately, our Lord has not left us without protection. In Ephesians 6, the Apostle Paul tells us that God has given us to defend ourselves against Satan’s attacks of deception and accusation. Our motto as Christians should not so much be “Name It and Claim It,” but “Take It Up and Strap It On!” This is an in-depth exposition of Ephesians 6:10-20. Order Now!
